An interesting concept. Does this mean that it doesn't need the ablative tiles used on the NASA Shuttle and on most space capsules since the 1950's ?

Like, can parachutes actually function at those initial thin-air conditions, and if so, why isn't everyone doing it?

If you *can* use parachutes, why not use it on the lift engines as well? To make the unit 80% re-usable.
