“From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free” is used in English for the original Arabic chant ("من المية للمية فلسطين عربية" romanized as "min el-maiyeh lel mayieh, Falastin arabieh") which literally means “from the water to the water, Palestine will remain Arab.” It was used as far back as the 1960s to describe the goal of promoting Arab nationalism in the region, as was accomplished in 1948 when Arab League forces expelled all Jews from Gaza and the West Bank as part of their effort to "throw the Jews into the sea". It is the Arabic equivalent of "You will not replace us."
