Written during his journey to Spain in 1862, “The Lotus Flower” is among Hans Christian Andersen’s more distinctive poems.
In the poem, Andersen draws a contrast between the Danish and Nordic ideal of womanhood and the Spanish women he closely observed while travelling through Spain’s major cities.
He does so by juxtaposing the oriental lotus — a poetic counterpart to the Danish water lily, which in Andersen’s time could be found in almost every village pond — with the blossom of the southern pomegranate, a symbol of sensuality and fertility since antiquity.
The music for “The Lotus Flower” was composed by Poul Udbye Pock-Steen in 2021.
The song was performed and recorded live by the Danish ensemble Via Artis Konsort at Nyvang Church, Kalundborg, Denmark.
Part of the visual material was filmed in the central Spanish mountain region of the Sierra de Francia, near the town of San Esteban de la Sierra.
The video is subtitled in Danish, English, and Spanish.
