#^European Airlines Threaten to Drop Boeing as EU Plans Tariff CountermeasuresThe European Union is
now targeting US aeroplane manufacturer Boeing with tariff countermeasures. Details on this new plan by the European Union will be announced to the public on 8 May 2025, revealing the full extent of these countermeasures.
The Coming Tariff Countermeasures From The European Union Will Hurt The Aerospace Industry
A few months ago, the Donald Trump administration announced fresh tariffs on countries worldwide. These tariffs are currently affecting the business process between
European aerospace firms and the US.
Now the European Union is preparing to strike back at the US with similar tariffs that will hurt its aerospace firms like Boeing. There are currently no details on the nature of these coming tariff countermeasures, but it’ll be the first time since 2021 5hat both trade powers have imposed taxes affecting the global aerospace industry.
The tariffs that the European Union plans to impose on the US aerospace industry will go into effect if the US doesn’t negotiate a truce. These tariffs from the European Union will target a list of over $100 billion in annual imports from the US, which include aircraft from Boeing.
This might match the 25% tariff and 10% reciprocal tariffs that the US has placed on imports from the European Union. Most European air travel firms are currently doing business with Boeing, and a tariff countermeasure will affect Boeing’s business.
These tariffs will make purchasing a Boeing aeroplane by these firms more expensive, hence driving them to source from local firms like
Airbus. This will be bad for Boeing’s business as it might lose a majority of its European clientele to its competition, Airbus.
European Aerospace Firms Threaten To Ditch Boeing In Light Of US Reciprocal Tariffs
While we wait to learn more about the nature of the European Union’s tariff countermeasures, some European aerospace firms are already threatening to ditch Boeing. Ryanair is one of such firms that is threatening to ditch doing business with
Boeing if the US doesn’t withdraw its reciprocal tariffs.
Currently, the Irish carrier has hundreds of aircraft orders from Boeing and is planning to cancel all orders. This move is due to the increase in not only the purchasing cost of these jets but also their operational cost due to the tariffs.
While these order cancellations might be difficult for Ryanair, it goes to show their dissatisfaction with the US reciprocal tariffs.
Airbus, which will be the nearest option for Ryanair to fall back to, is already sold out for the next decade.
Other European aerospace firms are also taking similar stands with Ryanair as they push for tariff-free trading within the aerospace industry. If the US fails to come to an agreement with the European Union on tariffs, we expect to see the implementation of these tariff countermeasures.
