Fascinating to compare Friendica with Diaspora. Most telling to me are these stats:

number of instances for diaspora* is a mere 37, while Friendica boasts 240
number of users completely belies the first stat, though. Huge Friendica has a paltry total of 22,618 while d* enjoys 307,250!

One can draw whatever conclusions they wish from that comparison, but it to me it suggests a big deal!

What your statistics do not show is the number of instances with open signups, in which Friendica offers fewer than diaspora. Most Friendica instances are private, "friends and family only" nodes that probably don't federate at all. Diaspora nodes must federate, though an Administrator may limit registration.
