I am slowly making my way around your site. Thanks for letting me in.

I can write on my own feed I've joined a small number or channels and even added a friend or two.

I also noticed that there is no public messages locally or from the outside.

How can I find public/general feeds?

It might not have a public/general feed. Admins usually turn that off since they can't control what people post on other servers.

You might consider turning on ActivityPub if it is not already on. It's one of the apps. This will allow you to follow people on Mastodon, Pixelfed, PeerTube, and many many other platforms. You can add them as a connection by using their handle channel@example.com or @channel@example.com.

You might also want to look at the directory to see if there are interesting people there to follow.
