Battery systems in Australia supply an average of 1.5% of the energy to the power grid. During evening peak hours, this figure rises to 4% for few hours. The cost is 600–800$/kWh of installed capacity. The current capacity is approximately 15 GWh, so the total cost has exceeded 10G$.
To avoid a widespread Dunkelflaute(5 days every year, 8 days every ten years) the EU plans to invest over 350G€ in "energy highways". It won't be the operators of solar panels or wind turbines(for whom these projects are being built) who will pay for them, but you. Without these energy highways, the probability is 10%.
A prolonged Dunkelflaute means that 1/3 of Europe will be without wind and solar power. Imagine relying solely on renewables and batteries. In that case, in addition to energy highways, you’d also need astronomically large battery systems. 100 GW for 168 hours (but we’ve even seen Dunkelflautes lasting two weeks!). 16.8 TWh. At a price of $600/kWh. Approximately 10T$ in investment. 300 million metric tons of mined ore for cca 2 million metric tons of pure lithium (approximately 160 million metric tons of batteries). The batteries would take up space equivalent to about 2,700,000 20-foot containers.
